Ya and then here within a few years when a majority of the baby boomers go to retire the market is going to be flooded with jobs again. Hopefully at that point companies will be fighting for our skill set and the competitive wages will go up.

I am waiting for this ....

All the auto painters around here are almost all over 50 yrs old...time for them to go and let the next generation get a chance

I second that...all the painters EVERYWHERE are way old. I do give a lot of them their deserved credit, but the new blood needs to get into some shops cause I've seen some insanely crazy stuff comin from some really young painters!

exactly...I've been a painters helper for quite a while now...and I am definentaly qualified to paint any finish but there are no jobs, and I got layed off cause nobody wants to retire, and/or "can't" ...

so I just wait cause painting is what i know and to change know would be a waste of time ...sighhh :D

The issue with waiting for the oldies to retire, is that the economy is so ****ed up right now, that they aint gonna retire cause they need the money.

Ya same with my field a majority of the people in my company even are well over 50. And for a long time before this down turn they were all talking early retirement and now they are definitely talking about staying in the game longer.

welll, if they aint gonna retire...we'll just wait till they die hahaa --- ok that was a little fckd up but oh well

as for the old painters - yeah, they are good and have their skills honed, but the new younger painters are bringing innovation, ideas, and methods the old timers don't want to use because they are set in their ways.

hell my father used to do custom paint jobs (mostly graphics on bikes, all hand taped, no stencils), and he was excellent and everyone knew him for it, but he never even tried painting out of a hvlp gravity fed gun

my greatest feat was painting two sportbikes before we raced in daytona - both a blue metallic flake with a black base and yellow number plates. I was very pleased at how it turned out. I'm far from a real painter, i just learned by watching him and reading some forums

My father painted cars for a living too, he did it for 32 years right up until they found the cancer. One of the best things was the other night after we had his funeral service, a man walked up to me.

My dad painted his 68' Camero for him nearly a restore but it wasn't to bad. The car had just won best of show in a state wide contest the same day my father passed. Its cool to have memories driving around you all the time, but sadly him and I never could get along when it came to work. I never did learn the trade, still like you said Cannon I think just because its in my blood I could just about do a half arse job.
